The Basic Rules of Search Engine Optimization

Any business website should be built in such a way that it is easy for the search engines to spider and index. Spiders and spidering refer to the algorithms that search engines, like Google and Yahoo, use to read your website's pages and determine what your site is about so that people searching for your topic can find you. Since the bulk of your website's traffic will come from search engines, this is obviously a very important facet of your wholesale business's website that you need to focus on.

You can hire companies that specialize in Search Engine Optimization (SEO), the term used to collectively refer to the methods and techniques of designing and building a website to product the most effective search engine results in terms of traffic, but this can be outrageously expensive, particularly if you are a small business without a lot of extra cash to throw around. And in these trying economic times, who wants to do that, anyway?

Fortunately, basic SEO is something you or your web designer can implement yourselves, and the more you get used to doing the basic stuff on your own, the better prepared you will be to implement some more advanced techniques in the future.

The goal of SEO is to get your website listed in the critical first page or two of the search engine results for your specific keywords or phrases. For example, if you sell wholesale lighting fixtures, you want to be right there in the reader's face each time they search for “wholesale lighting fixtures,” “lighting fixtures,” “wholesale lighting,” and variations on each.

To do that, you need to put some basic principles into effect. So with that in mind, the first thing to do is remember that each single page on your website should be treated almost as if it were the whole website itself. Therefore, each web page must be paid equal attention and have the basic SEO principles applied to each consistently.

For each of these pages, make sure to include your keywords and phrases repeatedly. Do not do it so much that the content becomes unreadable – doesn't make sense, in other words – but make sure they are there. Use those keywords in the title for each page so the spiders notice it. You can include your business name there, but make sure the keywords are there, too. People will likely not be searching for your company's name specifically, but they will be searching for whatever it is you offer. Then make sure to add these keywords and phrases to your site's meta tags.

If you build your site with keywords in the appropriate places, you will begin to see the great results it will bring you.
