Recession Proof Your Wholesale Business
By Sarah Pearson Published: 30/03/2009
Whether you think we are already in the thick of a recession or just heading towards it, there can be no doubt that the economy is currently in trouble and that is going to affect your wholesale business. Even if things really aren't quite as bad as the news is making it out to be, that is what your customers are going to be thinking anyway, and it will make them tighten up their purse strings regardless. In trying economic times, keeping a small business afloat can be difficult, but fortunately, there are some things you can do to recession proof your business and make sure you keep your head above water.
So how do you do it? What follows are two tips that you can implement. By using these, you can help make sure your business stays going when the going gets rough – and as a bonus, it'll make your business even more successful when the economy gets out of the current slump.
The most important thing to remember is that you should not cut your marketing and advertising budget. Sometimes the first instinct a business owner has during down economic times is to ease up on marketing, or even worse, cut out marketing entirely, in order to save money. You need to market your business – and market it well – to draw in your customers. Without customers, you have no business. Get your name out there so people know you exist and can come patronize your business. Research your competition and offer something new or different from what they offer to entice their customers to come over to you. But whatever you do – don't cut out the marketing. If anything, you should find ways to market even more.
Another thing to have a hard look at is your inventory practices. Have a go at reducing your inventory costs without sacrificing quality or putting your customers out. It is entirely possible to do it, and, in fact, could be rather easy with a little maneuvering. Are you ordering too many of a particular item? Can you find an alternative that will reduce your shipping and warehousing costs? Even more importantly – can you find the same item elsewhere at a better price? Just because you have always ordered a particular item from a particular place does not mean you have to continue to do that, especially if it means you will save money.
Stay focused and on the ball, and control your inventory and marketing, and you will find that your business will thrive and succeed no matter how rough the economy makes the situation.
