Cut Through the Internet Marketing Hype
By Sarah Pearson Published: 26/03/2009
There is no doubt that the Internet has become an important facet and mainstay of any business's marketing campaign. It gives businesses the opportunity to reach a far wider pool of potential customers than has ever been possible in the past. This is a particularly great boon for small business owners because it allows them the opportunity to find level ground with the big corporations without having the big advertising budget those corporations have.
If you are looking to boost your results in terms of your Internet marketing campaigns, you have likely noticed that information regarding how to do it is all over the web. Tons of people claim to be able to teach you how to make a mint with your 'net marketing, and for a fee, they will teach them to you. The truth is that most of this available information is not effective at best and useless at worst. So how do you know what to do? It makes it difficult for the beginner to be able to determine what, if anything, is actually good and sound advice.
In order to help you with that, here are a few quick myths about Internet marketing to get you started:
1.) It all starts with a great website. While a great website that is easy to use, read, and understand is absolutely critical, what everything REALLY starts with is a clearly defined message that states what your products are and what you do. A great website is nothing if you can't get a clear message across with it. The website is just the tool to help you deliver it.
2.) More traffic always equals more sales. This is only true if the traffic you are attracting is targeted. “Targeted” means that the people coming to your site are actually looking for what you have to offer. Attracting 5 million visitors a day is only useful if those 5 million people are in the market to buy what you've got. If you are attracting traffic willy-nilly with no regard for what KIND of traffic you want to bring in, then it's useless.
3.) There is one winning formula, and if you follow it, you will automatically succeed. This is not true, since each business is unique the services each provide are different. What worked for one company will not always work for yours. Your marketing campaign needs to be tailored to fit YOU.
These are just three of the main myths floating around on the Internet, so next time you spot one in the course of looking for some marketing tips, keep these in mind. If you see them being espoused, turn around and look somewhere else.
